"You have to remember to live every day," he said. "You have to enjoy your life. It is up to you, everything. You choose if you want to be depressed or if you want to keep going. I keep going."

Salt Makes Everything Better

Great advice, via Lifehacker: seriously saltify your steak before grilling. Even though it's cooled down a bit lately, there's still plenty of weekend warmth left to try this out. Love the scientific explanation on slide number three:

salt does something funny to the protein cells. they turn from tight-assed, stuck-up pricks to totally relaxed, fun-loving, sociable cool dudes. the music is Sade ... and everyone is having a good time. when cooked, the relaxed, tangled proteins trap the liquified fat and meat juice. relaxed proteins also mean t-e-n-d-e-r meat.
We'll see how the experiment turns out. Worst case, I'll be stuck eating steak for dinner. The horror.

Error

I've been getting this error message the last few mornings when I try to launch Outlook. Cracks me up.

OS Error
The solution is a simple reboot, but I think the error message could be a bit more helpful. I mean -- how should my operating system be configured? What can I change about my OS configuration that would enable me to run "this application?"

Stumbled across this fantastic gallery of images from Scotland while looking for something else (isn't that always the way). Water, mountains, sky, sunrise, sunset -- everything I love in a good photo, plus some good winter shots thrown in for good measure.

As with most mornings, I was squeezing in some work on the laptop before actually heading into the office. Catching up on some e-mails, reviewing the calendar and task list for the day ahead. Remember everything being a little sluggish. CNN, Yahoo News, the usual suspects, so I checked Scripting News and saw some small blurbs about something happening at the WTC. A plane hitting? Small, maybe, a commuter plane. Couldn't be possible. Must be a mistake, some kind of mistake.

I went downstairs to turn on the TV and iron a shirt for work. While the iron was heating up, I sat on the couch in numb disbelief as smoke billowed from both towers. The iron clicked off before I got up and started making some phone calls -- telling my co-workers that I wouldn't be coming into the office, telling them to turn on the news.

I was on the phone with M. when the first tower went down. How do you describe something like that? I think I must have stupidly repeated myself, repeatedly, stupidly, "it's just gone."

Where were you?

Not Back Yet

Vinny's back. Kottke's back, too. I'm not ready, just yet, to return to the grind. But it shouldn't be too much longer before there's some regular writing again.
